So as some of you know, I'm a member of the carpenter's union in my town. Recently as of this week I've started an apprenticeship after almost a year as a materials handler.
For those of you who don't know, a materiels handler is like a pre-apprentice and he's basically a carpenter's bitch. A labourer except that members of the labourer's union make more money and have better benefits.
Now I feel very good about starting an apprenticeship, but at the same time I feel ready to adress a few issues. Both with the union and with the people who bash unions.
Now let me say first of all, I've worked both union and non union jobs in construction. Often union workers are accused of being lazy, overpaid slobs. There's a little truth in this, I've known plenty of union guys who were stupid lazy assholes or worse, stupid suicidal assholes.
