To Whom It May Concern,

Ever since significant protests began against Viktor Yanukovych, we have received an influx of content related to the situation occurring in Ukraine and Russia. As events have progressed, Yanukovych has been swept out of power, with new leaders placed in control of most of Ukraine. Meanwhile, Crimea has separated from Ukraine (legally or illegally, depending on your views) to align closer with Russia. Protests against the west continue in eastern Ukraine, while protests against Russia continue in western Ukraine.

Due to the large impact and involvement of multiple parties in the conflict, we commissars have decided it is prescient to lay out our official, democratically voted upon stance on the conflict.

We, as a party, take a neutral stance. We advocate an independent solution for the conflict, one in which Ukraine (including Crimea) sets its own course and bows to no outside powers. This means no submissiveness towards Russia or the West.

The reason we have for this is one simple to explain: it is impossible for us to find significant common ground on either side. The West represents capitalistic, oligarchic repression which will clearly not act in the best interests of the Ukrainian people. For proof, look no further than the painful IMF/World Bank shock therapy programs introduced on other post-Soviet states. In addition, the new Ukrainian government has and will have Nazi representatives, in the form of the Svoboda Party and the Right Sector. We as communists should never associate with Nazis.

Russia does not present a much better option. Putin is a conservative, nationalistic oligarch. He has centralized power around himself and other rich Russians at the expense of the lumpen proletariat. He represses his people, with laws that criminalize all dissent, including laws against homosexuality and non-ethnic Russians (i.e. "migrants"). To side with him would be to betray our principles just as much.

What does this position mean for you, the average member of the CPDA? It means as follows. You may feel free to support whichever side you choose personally; we will not restrict your choice to do so. However, getting your artwork (visual or literary) which supports either side from this point forward will be difficult. We will not be accepting work which blatantly sides with either the West or Russia on this, unless it is purely rational and unbiased. We are committed to maintaining our position on this, and while you can discuss this with us at length, unless the situation in Ukraine changes our position will not.

In short, do not expect to see many pieces concerning this whole debacle in our gallery any time soon.

Signed,

I approve of this stance, mostly. Russian imperialism is no kinder or more gentle than Western imperialism. Nor, indeed, can the fascist-supported government suffering severe strains of Europhilia and desire to align with the devoutly capitalist European Union offer any better to the people of Ukraine. As ever, I hope that the people of Ukraine can overthrow a system rotten to the core, not fight against a government that is merely the symptom.
